Melbourne-based transport company Asciano Group yesterday confirmed its Pacific National rail-freight business was talking to mine operators in Queensland - understood to be Rio Tinto and Xstrata - to win coal transport contracts that would threaten Queensland Rail's dominance. The resignation of state Premier Peter Beattie is not the only major change incoming Queensland Rail chief executive Lance Hockridge will have to contend with when he moves from BlueScope Steel to take the top job at the struggling transport group later this year.Īside from overseeing what promises to be a considerable overhaul of the way Queensland Rail does business when it completes a strategic review that could involve greater private sector involvement next year, he will face a hungry competitor that wants to take some of his best clients.
